My wife is thinking about going all in as an electrician apprentice. She will need something reliable good on gas and around 20k. All of our cars/trucks are MT, so bonus points for that. This is one of the times I’d like to buy new.

The answer is Corolla.

Not great on gas and 30k around here.

Base has a cvt. I checked it out. Not a real deal breaker though.

Honda F it? Bonus points for the generation preceeding the current one

I enjoyed the one I rented last year much more than I expected to. A manual would’ve been a blast.

Veloster? Corolla hatch? Both of these start around 20k I think.

The Corolla hatchback can be had with the manual in the base trim level (SE). It starts ~$700 more than the sedan, but would probably be more useful.

Corolla hatchback, Kia Soul in base trim, and the Veloster in base trim seem to fit the bill.

Ding, ding, ding! SEs can be had easy under 20k. I’m getting an easy 35mpg out of my 6 speed hatch. I’m sure a sedan with the auto and the smaller engine gets even better economy.

I'll second AiM, definitely Honda fit. You can even fit a 6' ladder in one, they're crazy useful, great mpgs, can be had in a stick, can't get much more reliable. And shouldn't be any trouble finding one under 20k, all but the top spec ex-l can be had in manual although availability may be limited. I have my eye on a 2018+ fit sport for my next car once my wife's car is paid off later this year. Even has Android auto and apple carplay.

To be that guy that recommends the same thing a lot, the Hyundai Accent is an efficient and reliable runabout (If used is OK, go for ‘06
and up)
. I have an ‘09 and have had no major issues with it, now at 170,000kms. The newer ones still have a 6-speed manual option. Not sure about the US, but we still get them in hatchback and sedan form here in Canada.

Not a bad idea. The cargo versions are pretty affordable

Not sure about the offerings for 2020, but I search found quite a few 2019s with the manual option. Actually, I’d even suggest an older Corolla, and I doubt you would lose dependability. I’m driving a 2006 CE 5-speed manual that had a couple issues that were easily fixed (previous doofus somehow had a loose starter and an O2 sensor fault) and I even added cruise control for highway use. 2 years and nearly 25 thousand miles of trouble free driving for $3400. (I think I paid up for this car in an Ebay auction , but it was worth it...its a gem.)
